I didn't know the JGSDF still fielded the Type 74, but it's good that they do --- it's 105mm gun fires a wider range of shells than the Type 90's 120mm, and it carries almost twice the ammo.
The kneeling suspension is a huge plus too, especially in Japan where there's lots of hilly terrain.

There might be some development projects, but so far none of the hybrids can hope to match the diesel powerpack for power to weight and compactness. It might not seem like it looking at one, but space and weight for essentials like an engine is very limited. The holy trinity in tank design is Firepower, Protection, Mobility. An engine that's too bulky or heavy cuts into other areas of the design, or limits mobility.
