Muddy Roar
Birthday Gift for Kartonis
In all the icky mess there is a red dragon, somewhere... This is a strange pic for a strange friend. Simply put, its a red dragon (Kartonis) rising out of dark thick sticky mud just after an afternoon rain shower. Nuff said, and I will leave it at that. I did a dozen different experiments on this one as a I painted it. Starting with using a ruined painting attempt from last year and re-gessoing the surface with a stiff bristle brush to create texture I am not used to working on. A new way of painting the sky which is much faster and easier (I tend to make simple things overly complex). Not correcting my mistakes, or smudges and letting the painting incorporate them (which the mud did a wonderful job of hiding), etc... Any how, enjoy.

Goodness, I don't know what to say. What an awesome surprise, thank you so much! <3 I love the sense of power this has, a great leviathan rising from the deep. The glow gives off such a lovely energy and strength. Certainly a sight that any adventurer happening by would be wise to flee from, lest they feel the wrath.
The weight and cloying stickiness of the muck in this is mighty nicely rendered, it adds another whole personality to the piece above and beyond the dragon, how neat. And knowing your work, in person this is going to blow the photo here on FA out of the water, will be awesome to check it out! I particularly look forward to hearing about the experiments you went through with this...and glad the slime could help whisk away any trouble spots. :)
Seriously, thanks again a ton...this really brightened up a sour day today and makes for one hell of a gift!

Until I read the description, I thought that this dragon was constructed from mud, or he just crawled out from a peat bog.
Because dragons that crawl within our world and manage to get dirty outdoors just looks awesome in my opinion.
Really neat idea that you worked on here. The free falling mud from the dragon is a nice addition.
