You know, I don't think they technically count as gay as gems are described as being genderless and only appearing female. Even Steven's mother, from what I understand, had to shapeshift the required 'parts' in order to have a baby.

Yo, being GQ myself, I treasure any NB representation in the media. A bunch if femme-presenting nb aliens? SWEET, AWESOME, A+++!!! HOWEVER, it's never stated that this is the case within the show, Sugar only outright stated this in an AMA on reddit. To the uninformed general viewer the gems all appear to be women (except Steven of course). Therefore, relationships such as Ruby n Sapphire appear to be gay and therefore should count as representation of a lesbian couple within media.
Even if we want to be nitty gritty about it, it's still two femme-presenting nb (same gender) characters in a relationship! STILL GAY

Yeah, but the casual observer is marked by ignorance, are they not? Art depicting official characters does not have the connection with the casual observer that it has with the fan who knows what they're dealing with. It's sort of dependent on the alien observer concept.
