Part III
The sack was uncomfortable and dark, as the horseman traveled amongst the road. For a brief moment however, all motion stopped. I was indeed floating. Then as it seemed gravity returned and my nose was scraped upon the wool bag. I yelped, but it was unheard.
The travel was extremely short for the horse, as well as the tossing around of my head inside the sack, slowed to a stop. Outside over the whinny of the horse, I heard a cry out from John.
“John! It's okay!” I found myself shouting. John did not cease to scream, but the horseman responded. He drew out his sword, and his horse took a step forward.
As I listened, John finally dissipated his fearful calls, and his voice became bold.
“Y-You took m-my friend! I......I want him back.”
There was a pause. Following was a sheathing of a sword. The bag shook as apparently the horseman's hand reached in. He grabbed me by the ear and I complained,”Ow! What is this?”
I was pulled out of the bag and presented to John.
“Rob-Robert? Are you.....alive?”
I stared at him trying to focus as my head wobbled to and fro from the hand of the horseman, “John. You have no idea.”
A smile expanded across Johns face as he took me from the horseman's grip, “Oh dear friend! You haven't an idea what it took to keep the rest of you.”
He faced me toward a headless body, and I instantly recognized it as me. It wore a medium shaped pumpkin to replace me. John cradled me then walked over to the imbalanced, pumpkin wielding body and tapped his shoulder. He then took me and pressed me against my chest as I, with no control, cradled myself.
In a sudden rush I could feel my hands grabbing a fur covered head. I could feel the weight of the pumpkin on my neck. I knew now, I had control. The first thing I did, since I was in complete control, was to tilt so the pumpkin fell to the ground smashing. Then I positioned my head in my hands and brought it up over my shoulders. I took a breath hoping this would work, and slowly I placed my head where it was meant to be. A tingle around my neck alerted me that I was on, and cautiously I let go of my cheeks and my head was in place and on.
“It worked!” I said to John as I walked toward him, “I am complete again!”
“Good show!”
John patted my shoulder. Then our attention turned to the horseman. He just sat there on his horse.
John looked to me as his smile changed to an inquisitive expression, “Who is he?”
I smiled and nodded, “He's my grandfather.”
John looked more puzzled, but he glanced as the horseman turned his ride, and galloped off. In a burst of smoke and mist the horseman was gone, and the fog swelled on the ground.
“Come then!” John exclaimed, “We must return the 'complete' you to the bank. We've had some customers awaiting word from you.
“They would not believe this would they?” I replied and John chuckled.
