Pelary (Pel-A-Re) Species Bio
Basic Information:
Pelary are a group of herbivorous lizards (Though more closely related to plants in some case), feeding exclusively on leafy plants. They mainly live in warm, rainy tropical regions, though some have been known to migrate across seas to new areas.
Pelaries are unique in the fact that they are both animal and plant at the same time, producing both animal and plant cells to build their bodies. It is unknown how exactly they are able to do this, but the benefits of such a body type allow for extra energy consumption via photosynthesis.
Body Information:
Pelaries are long lizards, ranging anywhere from five to ten feet for males, and ten feet to fifteen feet for females. However, from the bottom of their feet to the top of their head, the average around three to four feet. Their bodies are wide and flat, and their feet tend to be thick and bulky. Their tails are the longest part of their body, starting out thick at the base and getting thinnier as it goes on. Their heads connect smoothly to their broad snout.
A Pelary's plantlife feels like typical plants, while their bodies are soft, and squishy almost, even though they have scales.
In most cases, plant life is exhibited through the tail tip and back of neck to the top of the head, but can be shown on the shoulders, chest, legs, and other parts of the tail in rarer cases. Growing flightless wings is a common mutation.
Diet and Pelary Type:
While it is unknown how exactly Pelaries are capable of this, a Pelary's design and plant type decends from its main diet. Pelaries are picky about what they consume, and usually only forage for one type of plant. When consuming this plant, a Pelary takes in the gentic code of that certain plant, and adds it to its own.
Typically, a Pelary prefers leaves from a tree or shrub as their diet. This usually leads to a fan of leaves sprouting on their tail and head, and sometimes on their back as well. However, occasionally a Pelary may develop a taste for flowers, fruits, or vegtables, leading to petals, or fruit/vegtable growths on their body. These kinds are an unusual breed of Pelary.
An example of an Uncommon Pelary can be seen here.
It is incredibly rare for a Pelary to exhibit multiple plant types on its body, as this means a Pelary has a diverse diet. These Pelaries, while extremely rare, are said to be the most beautiful and lovely of all Pelaries.
Social Behavior and Reproduction:
Pelaries are semi-social by nature. They tend to travel by themselves, but often gather in large groups to forage. They seem to be highly intelligent, often outwitting predators trying to eat them or their plantlife.
Pelaries can reproduce sexually or asexually. The asexual method is currently unknown, but it has been observed that antisocial or loner Pelaries seem to produce their own offspring. Pelaries hatch from eggs, often one or two hours after they are laid. There is typically one to three eggs in a clutch.
A mother and father Palery will travel together if they have young with them. Once the young is old enough to survive on its own, the family goes their own seperate ways but will meet up again if they pack together to forage.
