Well, Kimmy can clarify Scott's lineage, but I thought he was at least part Dalmation. In a previous strip, Jane calls him "Fireman's son". It doesn't always show up clearly, but he does have a black spot on the left side of his chest, very close to his neck. So, besides being a bastardization of his name, Spot seems to be an appropriate nickname. And maybe it's one he doesn't mind so much if spoken in friendship.
