Caught this snap of the AV-8 Harrier at EAA Oshkosh during a flypast. The Harrier is a VTOL aircraft and most certainly a loud creature. You can literally hear her hover all throughout the grounds when performing her hover mode.

I've heard they don't usually use VTOL on these because of all the fuel it uses to do it.

True , but to show it can be done at public relations events like this, they do it. 99.9% of the time they straight take off.

I heard they don't use VTOL because of the risk of overheating the engines.

the F-35 is suppose to be a VTOL as well last I heard. much more stable than the AV-8

It's a neat plane but the VTOL on it is kind of a gimmick 'cause of the fuel requirements and heat generation. Don't doubt the thing could be heard all over; they have to run WOT to hover.
