Shifter
Shifters are non organic (not anymore at least) and almost immortal. Their base anatomy consists of a near indestructible core that is connected to a "body" of nanobots that provide a small amount of power and are what shifters use to construct and change the bodies and forms they exist within/as, as well as the matter around them through contact. They can take almost any form they wish so long as they have enough matter to do so. But they will typically have a base form that will often share similarities with the Shifters original form, or will a specific form or a hybrid of creatures and things

Their core tends to be the size of a grape, But size can vary slightly depending on the amount of data stored within it as well as the overall age, but it doesn’t change that much overall. Shifters cores are black to when they are striped of power and are molecularly indestructible and are able to store ridiculous amounts of data within them and run a Shifters mind as well as control the nanos.

Conversion Process
A Shifter is able to create new shifters by converting a person, it is illegal for a person to be converted without the proper consent of the person, and this is checked in the initial process of conversion by the core’s sub mind of the “parent” Shifter. The process starts by tying the person to a horizontal surface that curves inwards in the middle slightly. The “parent” Shifter then preps a Blank Core (they have a dull white colour, as its only loaded with the Sub mind and is without purpose), as well as a batch of blank nanos (they have the same colour as the core), these are teleported to the Shifter via a device that the core has built into its data banks that acts as a small sender receiver for them using worm holes. The parent places the core onto the person, right on their chest, with the a small amount of blank nanos. The “parent” then initializes the first step within the core. It causes the core to start up an automated sequence that causes the nanos to scan the body then flow up into the face of the person (typicly the nose or ears) where it, with as little pain as possible analyses the persons mind and their thoughts, to ensure that the person is not being forced into it and its truly their choice, as well as if they a compatible to be a Shifter. In the event it is not there choice or they are not compatible the core withdraws from persons mind and returns to a dormant state, ready to be sent back or to be used on someone else. If the person wants to be a Shifter and they are compatible the parent will pour the rest of the nanos onto them as the core starts the second step. The second step is where the core send a large number of impulses through the brain using the nanos taking an accurate in-depth scan of the persons mind as well as copying it onto the core, during this process the core uses the person’s body to generate the energy needed to run the scan and copy process, as well as create more nanos, literally consuming the body of the person. They feel all of the pain but it’s more a hot itchy feeling rather than “I’m being burnt alive” one, (hence the binds) this is the one memory that is not copied. Once the body is completely dissolved and all that is left the core finalizes the integration of the new foremind into itself (a strange and trippy experience for them as they feel a whole bunch of new feelings and their memories are floating around unsorted. The core and nanos then change colour to the colour of the person. The core then enters a dormant sate as it commences internal discussions with its new occupant, teaching them how to shift and manipulate matter. During this time the “parent” moves the core and its nanos into typically, a glass tube with large bars and rods of metal and matter within it, as well as being filled with a filling substance so as to make it easier for the first time Shifter to assemble its body, but gravity bubbles, and artificial wombs have been used. Depending on the person that was converted the core will activate at some point after being placed in the tube and will begin to construct its first body. Once the body is completed the New Shifter is let out, they will stay with their “parent” for a year or two before they move on to other adventures on their own out in the universe.

Shifters minds
Shifters minds constitute two parts, the foremind; it the mind of the Shifter and is what give them will and thoughts, It is where the original mind is stored and allows for the mind to develop. The other half is the submind; it controls and sorts all of the data that goes between the foremind and the nanos as well as anything that is being interfaced with namely bodies, it is what allows the Shifter to change its form as well as matter around them. The sub mind also actively helps with the foremind’s development, preventing neural tumors and dramatic mutations of the personality, storage of memory and extra data, as well as archiving depressing memories so they don’t cause recurring mood swings, but they are still accessible if wanted and they don’t fully forget what has been archived.

Shifters are able to “visit” their own minds through a simulated reality within the Core, externally the Shifter enters a form of sleep or hibernation, this is allow a Shifter to sort through memories and collected data, as well as experiment with new forms within the simulated environment. Through this same method, Shifters are able to interface with one another, as well as other technology to be able to communicate, share data and memories. The foremind of a Shifter appears as they wish to appear while in this state, but their Submind appears as a small ball the same colour as the Shifter’s nanos and speaks with a monotone voice of the Shifter, it only acts as a verbal interface for the Shifter’s mind, responding only to questions asked by the foremind and acts a strong mental defense against unwanted intrusions into their mind.

Nanobots
Shifter nanobots look like glowing goo when viewed and are relatively fragile and important as without them the core of a shifter has no way to interface with anything. Shifters are able to regenerate there lost nanos but they consume a lot of power in doing so. Nanobots that are disconnected from the main group enter a dormant state and lose their glow. But it is possible for a Shifter to partly control it nanos from affar but it requires some form of command from the main core, ie via two way transmitters or through neo-cores, they are much more fragile than a Shifter’s main core. Neo-Cores are relatively simpleminded and have little though for themselves and will break down in under a year, being made up from a rough copy of their parent core they break down due to sheer thought. They are useful for creating larger bodies as they act as a repeater of the main core’s signal to the nanos. That or as miners or collectors for material.

The Body of a shifter is typically as durable and able as its design and the materials it was made from, as well as the type of tech that is tucked away inside. Being more machine then organic, they typically will have a covering that is used to protect the inner workings from damage, but they also can give them desired textures, such as soft fur or smooth scales. Shifter will allow there nanobots to flow through and around their body as it were blood as to be able to fully integrate there being to their bodies as well as allow for quick ability to regenerate damage as well as rapidly changing form.
The lines of light that cover a shifter as they are "open areas" (they often have thin coverings) points from which they can release high amounts of energy to form hard light structures that can have multiple purposes such as wings for flight or a horns and armor for protection or rapid interfacing with tech and matter. These points will be the same colour of the shifters nanobots.

Shifters are exploring the universe for it pleasures and when they find life they tend to passively swarm in to the location and blend with the wild life and when trusted offer the option to become a shifter to some of the locals, to save and continue their race, as it were. The shifters almost immortal so they often will watch planets with life from their start to their end before moving on to fine the next interesting place, taking with them eons of happy memories (it's very hard for a Shifter to be depressed as the core actively archives depressing memories, preventing them from interacting with the forebrain).

They are the party goers of the universe and they always try to have the best time, but can be fierce warriors when needed, having typically many planets worth of blueprints of weapons, vehicles, gadgets tools and machinery, stored within their minds, in such a way as to allow them to turn their bodies into armed to the teeth battle platforms that can potently render planets inhospitable to all life. But that would ruin the party for everyone else so it is forbidden and made capital punishment.

The closest thing a shifter can experience to death is to have their core removed completely from their nanos and rendered unable to interface with anything, resulting in total isolation and lack of ability to perceive time as their core slowly runs out of power until blacking out. It is possible to restart a core by placing it back into a blank nano solution that slowly recharges the core until the higher brain comes back online.
