On a foggy, cold, dim predawn on the Sea of Grass, early in the season of Harvest-Gladness, two young centaur males test their strength against one another.

One day these contests will be for real, and getting chosen by the females to lead a herd will depend on their shows of strength, intelligence, and artistry. Those who aren't chosen have three choices: to try again another year, to travel in an all-male bachelor herd, or to accept castration and serve under a lead male. Deadly serious business! But for now, this is merely play.

The sorrel is Irari (Rabbit), the dapple grey is Shurroshan (Owlfeather). Those are their colt-names, of course, and they'll change once they undergo adulthood rites.
