I feel like I like the 2012 version the best though, for how thatj image flows from the lower left to the right. The changed positions of the forearms interrupts that pleasing flow without really gaining anything. Straight arms indicated pandiculation, but I'm really not sure what he's trying to do here.

I think without any connection to the character or its motivations, it's easier to look at 2012's version as more visually successful. Ultimately, it didn't speak as authentically to the character as the newer version. So that's why the new changes you see were put into effect. Tweaking that yawn to make it voluntary.
