Me and some butterflies.
I find little more beautiful than places like this in the great basin. Neon blue butterflies soaring on the wind that rushes over a mountaintop between the summer thunderclouds on a balmy day - they celebrate your visit!
it's so quiet up there except for the occasional gust of the Washoe Zephyr, an afternoon wind that brings an icy chilled air down from the mountains every late afternoon, like a cool drink of water. When it blows through the sagebrush, you get that sweet nutty smell of the dust that coats its leaves and flowers.
"The sky above us was cloudless and brilliant with sunshine, the broad lake before us as glassy and clear, or rippled and breezy, or black and storm-tossed, according to Nature's mood."
-Mark Twain on seeing Lake Tahoe from Nevada.

Oh yes, the summits of volcanic peaks around the East Tahoe Rim are all teaming with butterflies that soar really high into the air on these powerful gusts. You'd think they'd get hurt, but they just go far. You wonder why they do it too. All day, just blowing around like confetti, far above where any flowers can grow. They and the lichen are the only things growing up there.
I know what you mean.
Seen tons of them up on the west side too, near Desolation Wilderness; Buck Lake area up behind Tahoma; Lost & Lilly Lake up behind Sugar Pine Point; even in the walk up to Shirley Lake in Squaw Valley.
Of course if you want to see other volcanic peaks go to High Camp at Squaw; I've seen the line of cones heading toward Truckee (better at nearly 9000 feet of view though).
