They do not! Not ever do they ever say Macha is a boy. Hell Tsukasa calls Macha "Mother" for the first 5 episodes. And she has a female sounding scream when she dies at the end.
It wouldn't make sense for the Epitaph titled "Temptress" to be a boy ever in it's evolutions. No other incarnations of Macha are boys, why would the first one be a boy?

eh maybe its just fanboism, like how some people want renamon to be a boy...i just think macha is cuter as a boy but having done a bit of research i discovered 1 that no definitive gender pronoun was ever given to macha during the cource of the show, she was only refered to by tittles or name, the scream is only heard in the japaness version of the show btw or so the articles i read say
speaking of that though.....why did the creators of .hack see fit to pick on poor macha/mia/whatever the little avatar version of thems name was [never watched much of gu] she didnt deserve all the suffering that was droped in her poor lap...what is it with anime directors and picking on cute cat girls, first bagi, then this *sigh*
