Another study piece for
Averious commission. One of the major components of the piece is a US. M16a4 rifle. Now I have drawn numerous variants of Eugene Stoner's iconic rifle but I have not drawn A4 variant.
In particular I had really studied the the rail interface system that is so prevalent with today's tactical rifles. I have looked at lots of photos of them and even handled a few rifles with them installed, but I have learned over the years that is not the same as actually having drawn them.
Now some folks might be wondering why I did not draw the rest of the barrel? Since the A4 variant uses a very similar barrel profile to A2 variant I decided to exclude since I have drawn the A2 before. That and, cough, cough, I didn't accurately calculate the overall length the rifle and ran out of room on the paper.

They actually issued me an M16-A4 with my first BN 1/7. Then when I PCA'd to 3rd AABN They issued me an M4. I preferred the A4 because it was WAY more accurate on dance qualification with the 20" barrel compared to the M4's 14.5" (which I currently have on my personal AR ((Ruger SR-556 custom barrel)).
They ALWAYS used the A4 for ceremonies. The M4's profile is too difficult to handle with the short rail system and placement of the front sight. It didn't work well for commands such as "Port Arms" and "Inspection Arms".

Yeah apparently countries that have adopted various bullpup style rifles have had to adapt or still keep full-size battle rifles like FAL just for parade duty.

No I do not have a tax stamp for an SBR it has a brazed-on flash hider bringing the total weapon barrel's length to 16.1" a far cry from that 18.2"+ on a standard 16.1" barrel with threads. And it has been fluted as well.
The 5.56 round prefers the 14.5" barrel. Better pressure and tighter MOA.

I have never liked this rifle, and here is why. It is claimed that the higher velocity round does more damage at a faster speed.
I think of it this way. if you had an MG midget or any other small two seater, and ran it at 80 mph, and a city bus at 40 mph, and crashed them into the side of a walmart, how many aisle in would each one get? My money would be on the bus. to quote the auto industry, there's no replacement for Displacement.
the m-14 and ak-47 both use larger and slower rounds, and in my opinion, have more stopping power.
I am more amused at a recent Canadian arms invention, a Clip fed shotgun

... This made my head hurt... Have you ever heard of hydrolic shock? Do you know what happens when a round does a through and through? It is absolutely devastating. I have seen it first hand. The wound cavity of a 5.56 compared to that of a 6.72x39 is massive...
I'm a professional ballistician!
The old M855 green tip was notorious for this. It was designed for 20" 1:12 use at long range, and the combination of extra stability from the faster 1:7 twist and lower velocity in 14.5" M4 barrels made them icepick if fired from more than about 60m away. Essentially they'd poke a hole straight through that may not even bleed too bad if you didn't hit anything immediately vital, and no tumbling so it didn't transfer much energy either.
The Mk318 mod.0 in use now by the marines is phenomenal in comparison.

Screw it...gimme an M-14 any day; I lugged one of those about off and on in the Navy for 5 years before they gave me an M-16A2. Pissed off the Gunny at the qual range with a conversation that went :
Me: What is this tinker-toy POS?
Gunny: That is an M-16 A2 Rifle! Do you think there's anything better than that, Sailor?
Me: Yes, Gunnery Sergeant...the M-14.
PAUSE
Gunny: I can't argue that...

I completely understand that: we were using them for topside and sentry watches on submarines at the time. The Navy has never been smart when it comes to small arms training or selection. I've got a few ARs, ranging from a Match Hbar to a bastardized rifle (BCM Gunfighter 18" with an Umlaut lower w/ collapsible stock) and they're fun to shoot.
I love my Ruger SR-5.56 custom. 14.5" fluted barrel. Lightweight for a piston (after reduction. It was a TANK before) and shoots like a dream. Running a Geiselle 3lb DMR trigger and Vortex Viper PST 1-4 illuminated reticle. Some time soon I'll get a Gemtech Halo suppressor and it'll be absolutely perfect for my 5.7 I run on it too. Quiet and fun! Great for hog control too.
The 7.62x39 and 7.62x51, given similar projectile construction, have more stopping power, this is true. On the other hand, both are heavier, both have more drop in standard loadings, and both require a beefier rifle that's harder to maneuver in tight quarters. Many people think that the 5.56x45 is a compromise round, and it is; it's a light round in a light rifle that, with current projectiles, is still fairly devastating, particularly when it tumbles. And given it's weight and straight-back recoil, follow-up shots are quicker and more accurate than an AK-47 or M14. Having seen it's effectiveness in the late 60's, the Russians adopted their imitation of the round, the 5.45x39.
The measure of a round isn't just in it's caliber, after all. Otherwise, I'd imagine the .455 Webley would be considerably more popular than, say, the 6.5 Creedmoor.
