The three sections of the art were designed to be used either as a whole, or cut up and placed in the appropriatre part of the doggeral they were drawn to accompany. Since the original "archy and mehitabel" poems by Don Marquis were illustrated by Krazy Kat artist, George Herriman, I did my best to imitate his style.
A few words are in order about Don Marquis as well. He was a popular newspaper columnist in the 1920's, who created the character of an artsy poet who was reincarnated as a cockroach after his death. The roach still has a literary bent, however, and began typing out stories (in free verse), usingg a typewriter in a newspaper office he happened, by coincidence, to be re-born in. Since he was only a tiny bug, he had to jump from the top of the typewriter, and hit each key with his head to strike a letter! Naturally, upper case was beyond his reach, and so was punctuation. Hence constructions like "won t" or "isn t". Archie had one friend in his second life -- a beat up, mangey alley cat named Mehitable, who claimed to be a reincarnation of Cleopatra. (The reader is left in little doubt that this is a vain pretense only.)
So what is my "Archie" story about? It's about a science fiction writer who died and was re-born as a book worm. His life story is loosely based on Isaac Asimov's, but not entirely.
Read on, if you dare penetrate the mysteries of the life beyond this one!

Wait... Does Chkuck Jones have anything to do with it? Are we thinking of "Shinbone Alley"? With Carol Channing as the voice of Mehitabel. According to my videotape, it was directed by some unknown by the name of John D. Wilson, and produced by equally renowned Preston M. fleet. It was based on a Broadway production of the Don Marquir classic. I hate to think there's yet another botch of "Archie & Mehitabel" loose in the world.
Steve Martin liked it!
I remember him waxing enthusiastically about having seen Shinbone Alley many years ago, and how there was a sexy cat dance somewhere in it, but every time he's seen it since, the dance was cut out.
It is to laugh. For one thing, he forgivews a piece of crap for its unmistakable crapiness, but because there's a sexy cat girl in it. (As if Carol Channing in a scrawny cat costume was sexy.) And then it turns out that the sexy moment he remembers is probably imaginary, and never existed!

I remember! I read Archie poems in an article about him in grade school! 'cept didn't he spell it "archy"? I can't remember ... I do remember though that he couldn't work the Shift key (manual typewriters, remember) and he couldn't punctuate.
GAWD, that takes me back! Thanks!
