Yay it works! We now resume our normal programming...
K, sorry, repost. Hurray for garbled mess that happened last time D:<
Awesome. Now that FA's stopped timing out everytime I try to upload this, you guys can listen to it :D So I made this the exact same time as Territorial, as seen here http://www.furaffinity.net/view/1625944/
I mostly wasn't satisfied with the verse guitar riff, and still kinda am not, but I'll let it slide for now. That why it's taken so long to get a WIP on here, that and 504 Time Out. That said, I do very much like the chorus guitar riff. Also, GUITAR SOLO. Oh god, I love it. Worked on it for like a day to piece it together and then record it properly. This is perhaps the best recorded solo I've done so far in terms of arrangement and following the chord progression, feeling and over all coolness ;), I like it. Betcha can't guess my exact favorite part in it ;).
The little lead synth playing in there was originally going to be the "vocals," as I've done that before, had the synth play vox, cause I couldn't be damned to come up with lyrics or record them for that matter. However, after listening to it for so long, I've heard other little melodies overtop it all, prompting me to just have the synth as an instrument opposite the guitar.
My buddie's since gotten a boner for this song, so he's taken it upon himself to write lyrics for it. And all the power to him, as I'm anxious to hear what he's got in mind for it.
Named "Rushin'" for the obvious Rush influence of it, in drums and synth pad. I totally think of "Subdivisions" if I had to pick a specific Rush song, but there are several other non-singles that sound like they had a hand in this as well.
Work in progress so there's work to be done yet. Comments, critiques, improvements, I'm all ears :D
Wow, that seemed like a un-necessarily long description....

Nice - I like it. Pretty decent mixing, and the solo sounds great of course. However, my little quip with this is the drums... Nothing wrong with the programming, but they do sound a bit mechanical...
If you don't have access to better samplesets, toss me a midi file some time and I'll render out something nice for you to mix back in.

Ya, drums have always kinda been the bane of my recording. I use the LM4 MKII and don't have that many patches for it. I actually mix and match what patches I use when I render to audio. I also have random velocity presets for each instrument of the drums, 85-100, 75-90 etc. What I didn't do this time, was set a bit of swing in the quantize, thus robotic.
I've been trying to find a better way of producing real sounding drums. I have Kontakt, but only a few drum patches, and I haven't made up my own yet, even though I have one shots I recorded when we rented a $3500 DW set back in april. I know there's also Descreet Drums and FXpansion's BFD, but I've used neither. What do you use for drums?

It's more about velocity layers and round robin in your samplesets than it is about humanizing your drum track, although humanizing is important (if you're less lazy than I am. )
For real drums I use XLN Addictive Drums http://www.addictivedrums.com/ . It's less overkill than BFD, and more flexible than Drumkit From Hell from Toontrack. However, if you're on a budget I'd try to get your hands on a Korg Nanopad since it comes with Ezdrummer Lite. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/nanoPAD/ I'm not -certain- if Ezdrummer Lite is any good, but it sounds decent.

Ya I was checkin out the BFD2, and holy shit does it ever look huge. Indeed a bit overkill. I totally forgot about Addictive Drums. One of my teachers mentioned it before, and I have to say, I quite like it, or atleast what I've read/seen/heard. I think I just found myself a new toy.
One thing I wish we spent more time on in school is drum programming and learning/using various drum modules and samplers, 'stead of just LM4 and Kontakt.

I found a free kit that's got some decent dynamic range in it for free.
http://www.pettinhouse.com/Yamaha_9000.zip Kontakt. Go grab it and use the velocity layers.
Unless you've already snatched Addictive Drums. In which case, screw the yamaha stuff. :)
