Ambrose is, or was, his lord's right hand. Due to an unmentioned streak
of bad luck he no longer works for the gentry, or entangle himself in
politics. Instead Ambrose seeks out the mysteries of what he calls
'The long song' a theory that the whole world is in fact a story told between
gods sitting around a table while playing the world, and its peoples, like
some sort of game. A theory unpopular with most of the other colleges.
