I use the Zoom B3 actually, it has a fantastic Bass Driver patch and plethora of other effects you can mess around with.
If only the whammy effect on it was better, so I am guessing I'm buying the EHX Pitchfork next plus and expression pedal. Now I only need to get my Source Audio Manta and Hot Hand back from my guitarist.

Look, the Zoom, even with it's amp modeling sounds crap without proper amp simulation or a real amp. Trust me, almost any amp will do. I can get my tone of choice with the Bass Driver patch on it(always on) through any amp I use. Even through guitar rig(listen to the recordings on my page, it was recorded direct with the Zoom B3's Bass Driver patch.
I think that bang for the buck wise it surpasses the VT Bass and the POD HD.

Well the thing is I'm trying to work on a dual-amp rig, ala dUg from King's X. I wanted to get 2 decently-powered power amps for cheap, and get 2 used Peavey 2x10s. I know you can dual-amp with the HD500 and possibly pan them left and right in stereo, but I'm not sure about the Zoom. If the Zoom can be ran in stereo and possibly split the signals like you can with the POD XT or POD HD, then I'll look more into it.
Something like that. Like Chris Squire, except with one amp. But I'd be having two sounds at once. One side would be a compressed clean sound, and the other would be a gritty dirt sound with a good bit of growly OD.
Think Eddie Jackson from Queensryche. The Empire album. He'd have a really grindy midrangey signal, with a DI blended to get the low end.

Yeah, almost positive that's his setup since 10,000 Days, unless he changed it recently. http://www.a2athot.com/me2004_img/j....._tool_2011.jpg
His old rig was different, though. He used Mesa M2000's, M-Pulses, and the 400 bass head before using Gallien Krueger. Pretty sure he still used a dirty/clean bi-amp rig, though.

Jesus tapdancing christ I had no idea his rig was that complicated!
I understand that most gigging bassists today use a wet/dry setup. Makes a lot of sense actually, I think I'd use it too if I had a pedal like lets say....the EHX SuperEgo or something. Wish there was a better pedal for ambient pads though for the bass, I guess I could always get a foot pedal setup like the Moog Tauros but that shit it expensive.

I can understand why. When I try using a totally distorted signal, it can get really muddy since it's also distorting the low end. If you distort only the mid range and the high end, and dial out the low end, it can make things sound more defined and sharp, but really thin. How do you solve that? Run a clean, compressed signal to get all that low end back. At least thats how I think it works :U
Oh, that reminds me! I remember seeing this one guy that emulates a Moog Tauros by using a MicroKorg (or any other synth/module) and using a footpedal controller, such as the Roland PK5(A) or a Keith McMillan 12-step. It's still not cheap, but it isn't $2000.

It actually does work like that, that's why many bass distortions today have a blend control and even separate outputs for the wet and dry signal.
I think I've seen something like that, but honestly I'd get a cheap ass foot controller and attach it via midi to my cheap ass second hand Yamaha beginner keyboard, LOL.

Yay, I was onto something. :3 I know the VT bass didn't have a blend control which is why I was iffy on it. They recently introduced a DI version with blend, though, so that's good. I still rather go with the dual-amp setup, so I can further tweak the sound and get what I want.
Well hey, what's stopping you from doing that? Get a cheapo Behringer FCB1010 and go crazy. :v

Yes it is more tweakable but on the other hand isnt it a handful to get from place to place? I mean it's two fuckin bass amps.
The fact that right now I dont need that setup, lol! And the fact that I'd rather save up ASAP for a car....
But that is a nice idea indeed, my Yamaha has a MIDI in and out and a direct out for amplification, think it can work?

Weeelll, I already plan on going the HD500 route with my guitar, and I planned on getting a lightweight power amp such as the Carvin DCM1000L or Crown XLS2000. It wouldn't be hard to bi-amp if I use the same modeling rig for my guitar with the bass as well. Just run the power amp in stereo, run the two outputs of the Line6 into both inputs of the power amp, run a dual-amp setup and pan them both left and right, and go with the 2 2x10 idea I had earlier, or a 2x10 (dirty) + 1x15 (clean), both being plugged into their respectful channel. Heavy as shit, but worth it. :p
Aaand I'm in a similar situation as you. Don't need a car, but still need more computer parts and guitar rig parts. :l

The POD HD recently game with a bass pack you can get for $30. It includes Gallien Krueger and Ampeg amps. Just run those amps without cabs, use some effects, and let the power amp + bass cabs handle the post-amp sounds.
For guitar, I just planned on getting some Eminence or Celestion-loaded 2x12. Versatile, but small. The guitar and bass rigs will be the same thing, just with different cabs.
Does you keyboard have a MIDI in? Could probably do some reading to see if the FCB1010 can be used to control a keyboard.

Oh, no, I didn't mean both at the same time. x3 I mean like if I wanna play guitar for a gig, I'll swap the cab and use guitar-based patches. Use bass, I'll swap the cab for the 2 bass cabs and use bass patches. Although doing something like using the bass with an octave up, or a guitar with an octave down would be cool. Split the signal and have the octaved signal run it's own cab, while the dry unoctave signal gets it's own cab. That's actually really neat.
Do you have a model name for the Yamaha?

I have been playing for 9 years now & am completely self taught. Most bassists would decapitate me for saying it, but I prefer playing with pick over fingerstyle XD ..And as long as you enjoy playing, you will progress! I'm waiting on a new instrument cable atm, as mine broke. I need my bass XD
The first song I tried using the slap technique on was Undisclosed Desires by Muse.. I re-tabbed it to only E & D string, because I couldn't hit the A with my thumb for the death of me. Then I tried playing Foreigner's 'Urgent' with same amounts of success. I love the sound you get when using the slap technique, but it's hard XD ..Aaaand I have to listen in on Antipop real quick, hehe.
