My guess, is that in order to have grown at the pace that they have, and thrive in an environment filled with predators, You need some sort of protection. Or it could be in order to hatch out of the shell, they needed sharp bones, sort of like present day reptiles and birds have a "baby tooth", in order to break themselves free from the shell. xP But it's just a theory.
