Here's some less-than-day-old quail chicks; one was apparently very startled by its first dream, or whatever was happening in its tiny brain to cause this reaction.

They've been successfully imprinted on me and are being so constantly cute that I'm probably going to get sick from it somehow.

Short story: I've been rehabbing/releasing songbirds for a while now, and decided that it's far past time I get some specifically for the purpose of being pets. So I looked up coturnix quail breeders, asked to be told when a new batch of eggs were hatching, bring 'em home and imprint on them the moment they first see the world.
Boom, instant adorableness.

To the chick, it's gotta just be incredibly confusing. Just got born, all this new stuff happens, then it goes to sleep and experiences something totally different, then startles awake like it just died in its dreams, and then is back in the first place again.
Is life always going to be like this

Thankfully I already have a bunch of bird-related supplies due to my habit of rehabbing baby songbirds in the summer; but even then, they're easy to raise. All I needed to do was throw an adjustable heat lamp into a plastic crate, provide fine-ground protein powder, and a safety-rigged water bowl.
There's a reason hatching chickens and other poultry is such a common elementary school project; they're cheap, available everywhere, and pretty easy to care for!
People just don't think of them as "pet" birds as much as parrot-types, but that ain't no reason not to own your own little egg-laying landbirds if you so wish.
On that note, I'm already looking up ways to prepare quail eggs, 'cause they're gonna start laying 5 a week once they're just a month old!

If I had the room and more time to donate to caring for the little ones. I'm out of the house for almost ten hours every other day
That, and I've cats. Who'd think I was trying to grow snacks for them >.< An I dunno how Quail would do in Texas, the heat is murder some days

Haha- well to answer that, I'm in Texas and so is the breeder I got 'em from (although these lil' guys will probably spend most of their time indoors), and I've got a cat too! I can't say she has much of a hunter's instinct though, so your experience might be different from mine.
But yeah, the heat around here has really been setting some new records lately.

Least we're not swimming to and from work again, one minute dying from a drought, next minute, WATER WORLD
Still, I appreciate the insight, Will you be releasing the little ones, or breeding and then...eventually..y'know...*makes slicing motion across neck*
I ask, because if I raise something other then plants. I tend to grow attached to it

While I release all songbirds in the rehab process, these little ones I hatched just to be my little buddies. This specific breed too (coturnix), for its general acclimation to the indoor life they'll have.
Don't require much space or expensive foods, not too big, not very loud, and very relaxed around humans and handling, especially when raised by hand right from the start so they can imprint on you. Plus I like their design.

Oh markings wise, as chicks they're adorable and I looked up the adult breed, that's a very round bird x3
Still they look like little feathery balls of poof.
As for the not making much noise, I wonder if that's gonna be an issue with, Cause *points at bouncing baby birb*
They're not sound sleepers from the looks of it

Well the little one is definitely "Cricket" due to its constant, but extremely faint style of chirping, but the bigger, slower one (with a slightly bent beak and some other oddities... she's the one doing the crazy hop here) I'm waiting to name when a good idea comes to me. It seems to enjoy doing everything it possibly can to nearly die, but I'm pretty sure she'll make it if she's lasted this long.
As for the eggs, there are indeed a few local places I could sell to, if there's ever more than I can eat (and I'll be eating a lot of 'em)

This is the emergency instinct testing system- SNAKE! This was only a test, if this was a real emergency, you'd have been eaten... Maybe, probably.
Quite light on their feet they are! Do the even weight enough that you register more than 'there's something in contact with my hand' while holding them?
Also- don't mention pop-quail around hungry cats, they might swarm you! ;P
