Hey, have you tried gradient mapping? It's a great way to go from greyscale to color without loosing any brightness!
Are you working in photoshop?

yes~
and the process I use at the moment is the same that Dave Rapoza uses, to go to color, I use a soft light layer, it doesn't really loose brightness, only if I want it to~
