i think it's been stated that Greg raised Steven, and that he had only recently (like a couple years) met the gems.

I'm just waiting for the great revelation that Steven is actually 2 and he was either born 10 years old or Rose actually carried him for a decade because she didn't know how long human gestation was supposed to last.
