I'd say that when it comes to helping a character grow/develop, there's nothing better than drawing more of them. Try out different poses, expressions, etc. and in the process, your brain will start "figuring out" who they are, and give you more ideas. Put 'em in different situations, figure out how they would react and look. The more there is, the more solid an idea you'll have of that character!
