Here is about a 90% complete work in progress of a 17th century set of pikeman's armor for one of our polearm troops. The armor is made in 16 gauge steel for competitive use. The final set will include a waist belt, shoulder straps, backplate, gorget, pikeman's pot helmet, and a forged 16' pike.
On period originals the tassets are fluted with extra rivets added to give the appearance of having multiple lames rather than being single panels. I may add this feature at the end of the project.

It is a very rewarding field to get into. It takes some specialized tools but you can learn to make most of them. I would suggest starting with winged knee and elbow cops. The are fairly easy (cheap too!) and will teach you several basic techniques. The more of any item you make the better you will get.
When you do start, don't get discouraged. Every armorer I know has a plastic bin full of reject projects. In fact 3 of us scrounged through our "seconds bins" once to outfit a troop for a major war event with the best fitting set of mismatched armor ever fielded. The true beauty of iron lies in the fact it is the most reusable medium on earth.

I have always wanted to get set up for bronze casting. There are a lot of accessories you really just need a small scale foundry for. I hear you on bowyery. I do fletching and another one of our guys does the bows. Sometimes wood staves just fail on you. It always seem that when they do they wait till the end of the shaping process to go.
