My unnamed Renamon character. This is how I would have designed this digimon if it were up to me. I don't really know much about digimon other than this one is insanely popular for some reason, and that they are technically "non-gendered"... which I took to mean they can "digistruct" whatever gender they feel like being. So this character has 3 forms, the first one is "Androgynous", and the other two are male and female respectively.

I'll explain since Digimon are a hobby of mine.
Digimon are of various species, all having strengths based on evolution level.
Digimon cane be male, female, or anything inbetween, but it doesn't really matter. The reason is due to how they reproduce.
All digimon have a thing in them called a Digicore.
This Core is where the central code of a digimon is stored. Should this be destroyed, the digimon will die via deconstruction. Digimon can also receive physical damages bad enough to actually make their body shatter
For digimon to reproduce, ANY two digimon get together and mix data from their digicores.
This process will make an egg, often having NOTHING in common with the "parents".
Digimon might shift "gender" upon evolution, but as a rule All digimon are part of a species (with extremely rare exceptions). A species that consists of males and females and whatever else. The only exceptions are the blatantly male or female digimon (Angemon, Angewomon, Devimon, Lady Devimon, so on and so forth).
To elaborate on Renamon specifically.
Digimon have several evolution levels:
Egg > Baby > In-Training > Rookie > Champion > Ultimate > Mega
Or in japanese
Egg > Baby 1 > Baby 2 > Child > Adult > Perfect > Ultimate
Renamon is of the Rookie/Child evolution stage, the stage that has the most human sized digimon, along with most of the "cute-yet-still-battle-capable" forms IE: you could see them in pokemon.
Don't let the names fool you, ANY digimon of ANY evolution state can mate with ANY partner. Also, due to how the digital world works, the reason digimon evolve to be so strong and fight so aggressively is due to the natural fight for survival having been accelerated like a computer simulation. baby digimon usually spend their lives hiding until they evolve into a rookie/child form, at which point they fight and try to kill other digimon. This makes them grow in strength.
Also, digimon are NOT stuck into specific evolutions like pokemon.
Digimon actually have multiple branching evolution pathways that all depend on their environment and fighting experience. Yes, Renamon COULD evolve into Kyuubimon: http://digimonwiki.net/Kyubimon
OR one of TWENTY ONE ( 21 ) other forms that are all of the Champion/ Adult form, which then can usually evolve into around 10-15 ultimate forms, so on and so forth.
Renamon is popular due to the same reason lucario and krystal are popular. Renamon was a partner digimon of one of the main characters of the 3rd season of Digimon, was a very skilled fighter, and actually was often portrayed as female in her demeanor (save for the german dub which had a male voice). Due to the fact that it's an anthropomorphic canid (a Kitsune specifically) and it was already of a basic body type that folks were drawing, it exploded in popularity.
Commence OCs and such of it being made and, well, you got the same thing as what happened to Lucario, except Bandai/Namco never "pushed" Renamon's popularity, nor catered towards it, whereas gamefreak dedicated all of mega evolution and half the plot of X and Y around shoving a lucario into your party, along with the lucario statue and gym leader. (most people call this the Lightning effect).
Woo, ok, anyway, this is roughly the most basic intro I could give. PLEASE ask me ANY questions you may have, I'd be HAPPY to explain anything you're curious about ^^
