Well, I finally got the balls to colour it, and I'm not sure what I think. The wave, I'm still a little iffy on, but that's my own fault more than anything, and the tail looks like it could use a little more proper shading, but I'm afraid to touch it again, the pencils might press right through the paper. ^^; Anyways, this looks a lot more impressive like, face to face, but this is decent enough, I'm still looking for opinions on it, and suggestions on my colour work, since I'm really trying to improve with traditional media!
Anyways, this isn't going on my body 100%, it's more a draft for something that eventually will. I need someone to do better waves for me, or I need to practice to get what I want. But that's a story for another day, since I really must be going to work. :x

I really like the wave, actually. ^_^; At first glance I sort of thought it was hair, but if nothing else, the colors are very well done on it.. At least.. I certainly think they look good. This is pretty cute! I really like the face and the -actual- hair. ^_^;;
Mm.. I don't know if you've found new methods of coloring and shading or what since this was posted, but since I can't tell from where I'm sitting.... My advice on it,
if you have a moment, what my favorite AP art teacher used to tell me:
Layers. Layering color is very, very helpful, and important to get a realistic 'shape' on figures.
Take the pencil of the color that most closely represents the color you want to eventually end up with and color the area with it lightly. Not so light that it's hard to see, but just enough so the eye can see that color.
Next, take the color you're going to shade with. Never shade with black unless you're shading something you intend to be flat, because black is very overpowering. Indigo blue and the darkest brown you have work wonders instead of black. Use the brown first to lightly shade, then go over it with the indigo, and repeat as necessary, alternating with the original color until you have it to the proper darkness
White can be used to show shine, and also just to where the light is hitting. You can also alternate it a bit with the original color.
To be perfectly honest, if I could sit down with you, my huge bag of color pencils and just have a little art Jam, explaining all of this would be a lot easier. If you have AIM, MSN or G-chat (and actually still care after all my blabbing I've done here.. and elsewhere on your gallery this morning >_>) I'd be happy to chat art (or anything) with you ^^;;

I'd be happy to chat with you too! In fact, I'll add you to my AIM as soon as I'm finished with this comment.
Thank you for your input, though! I actually have some more recent coloured works up where I've been taking that very same advice into account. I found my colouring style changed a lot after I started using it. ^_^ Black is still something I have trouble with, as evidenced by my most recent pencil-coloured work.
I wish we could sit down and do the art thing, though! I routinely do it with a couple of friends in RL (who also have FA accounts) but the more is definitely the merrier. *cry* Ah well~
