Watchers Giveaway Prize - 3/3
Tumblr repost: http://abovecloudsart.tumblr.com/post/126796544292
Finally finished! This is the final Watchers Giveaway Prize, this time for Zedex
Oh man, the universe totally worked against me to make this take way too long. If it wasn't the daily thunderstorms keeping me off the computer for hours a day, then it was Photoshop being stupid. For some reason, PS wanted to shift half of my layers to the left whenever I would rotate the canvas. I've never had that happen to me before, so I didn't discover what was causing the problem until about 10-12 times in. Fun!
But I'm super happy with how the final came out. When Zedex asked me to draw a desert wasteland, I totally took it as a chance to practice atmospheric perspective, since I don't have a lot of experience with it. I'm pretty happy with how it came out, though I would like to practice with it some more before I would consider taking commissions for "deep" backgrounds like this.
Oh, and if you're wondering about the gears: Zedex asked me for a Steampunk theme, and that's my attempt to fulfill his request. I'm... not super familiar with Steampunk stuff, but I do know it involves gears at least. GEARS!
I hope you like it. :)

Hnnngf as I said in the note that background is phenomenal!~ ;; I like what you did with the gears too xD
It really does give that feeling that you're entering through a large archway that stretches for at-least several miles before you'd find another way out of the deep valley below! Without flying that is haha.
Zed's detail is also gorgeous, without taking much away from the background itself, but again without being insignificant just mmmf ;; I Greatly enjoyed and was humbled by the opportunity to get this from you. No worries about the time, stuff happens xD
But yes anyway.. gears. *twitch*

Thanks agaaaaaain. <3
Gosh, it's so flattering to hear that you like it so much. And I'm happy that the depth came across. You asked for an empty wasteland, so I thought the best way to achieve that was to separate Zedex from the BG and really show the emptiness of it all. I came up with some other ideas that were closer to the ground (like one of Zedex walking around some abandoned buildings) but the wasteland feel wasn't as strong as it could have been.
It was kinda hard to find a balance between Zed and the BG. I had to play around with Zed's scaling and position before I found something that worked. But I really think this picture helped me level up my BG skills.
Gears and blimps! :U

i was just over on anthony's page, and you were expressing frustration with composition.
this is one that has is, what your more recent posting, maybe be frustrating you for lacking.
here you've used all four of the major sweet points to very good advantage while completely avoiding that deadly center.
and you've lead the eye to stay within the frame too, though it doesn't have to be as conspicuously guided to do so.
i mean it works here that you did, i just mean it still can without the arch being physically present,
by having the content of each sweet point point to the next within the frame.
