I probably should put up a ref of my main fursona. This is Hüe, she's mostly cat with some rattlesnake in there. She was the product of genetic modification in order to give those modified more aggressive tendencies, to lose the 'human' aspect of themselves, and enhance their senses. Before the modifications she was 100% cat. The scales are a side effect of the serum they used to modify said genes.
