I would send the dot towards the couch, then shut it off at the crack near the base making it look like it went under the couch. Cats would sit staring under the couch for a solid 5 minutes :D

I must share though...I had three cats at the time when I got a lazer dot toy for them. My super-old Orange kitty Cheynni watched it for like two seconds then ignored it and never moved...she literally didn't care.

My Munchkin cat Ember got super excited and tried to catch it...that first time she found that it wasn't a solid toy but a dot of light and she got super offended and ignored it after that.

My Persian kitty walked in and saw the dot, and began backing up. I wiggled the dot and she poofed her coat in panic and fled. Every time she saw the dot she would RUN AWAY in terror.

And the store who "guaranteed" cats would love it wouldn't accept it as a return because I took it out of the package.

I had to give it to a friend of mine with cats. My cats were cat toy defective, LOL!!!
