In written canon, they're actually a LOT wider, this is just the more comfortable size I've noticed artists prefer to draw them.

Oh! Yeah I've had similar problems with my one character, Fraise. There's a certain comfort zone to size that varies between artists - a seldom few will ever be able to draw big enough!
