...he could hear their footsteps behind him, the low moans of the undead and the rattling of dry bones as they closed in on him. He was lost in this unending forest, the trees providing only temporary shelter from the onslaught of the enemy's arrows. They were relentless in their pursuit of him, and with every step he felt his strength fading until he could barely stand anymore. Falling to his knees, he accepted his fate. This was the end. He lowered his head, everything going dark.
Then, a flash of light, searing white and gold, filled the clearing and drowned out the surrounding trees from his vision. He held his hand up to shade his eyes and saw a woman standing before him. She reached for him, framed by a halo of the purest light, and he could barely make out a smile on her face. She did not speak, but somehow he knew she was beckoning him to approach her. The last thing he remembered was falling to the ground at her feet.
The first of the two pieces commissioned by
based on our adventures in Minecraft. Hence the zombie and skeleton references in my little story above. ;D
The second part was posted just before this one, so click previous to see what happens next. :3

I'm going to focus on the technical parts as I do each of these, and what I think they do for the piece. I love a lot about traditional art, and the quality and style of your work, but I want to trim something out to reduce the time I spend going through these.
Barrier pieces first, the trees being tall and covering much of the piece act as barriers, helping prevent the eyes leaving the piece. The leaves over, Destiny I assume(?), are dark and also create a barrier effect. This really holds your eyes on both characters in each half as you look at one or the other. The roots and earth on the bottom also keep the eyes towards the middle. The middle tree is interesting as a barrier, because it helps contain eyes on either character, but Luthien's hand extends across it, which bypasses the tree as they reach for each other. It results in following their hands one way or the other based on which direction you look. Now, I'm normally symbolism dense, but at least in this case, if only to me, I think it's interesting to work this way as reaching out an empty hand is a way of breaking through the traditional social barrier of friend or foe, especially important in this kind of setting.
Because both characters are looking at and reaching out for each other, our eyes can easily travel between both characters, and not really stray away anywhere else as a result, basically making a loop looking at each character, keeping focus on the characters. One other thing that stands out are the arrows, as they point inwards, literally, into Destiny. Something creating a line effect can trail the eyes in a direction, especially with something that overtly or covertly points in a direction. I mention in part because objects pointing out of the piece could trail the eyes out, but I'm not sure how much effect that really has when looking at a single piece on a computer screen. I noticed as I was finishing that the leaf design on Luthien's dress can lead the eyes downward, making the bottom left barriers very good as the eyes can easily follow the grass to Destiny.
I don't know how clearly I mentioned in the self portrait piece, but brightness can pull, lead, and trap the eyes. In this case, it draws attention to Luthien, and with the halo being a central point of it, locks onto her as you follow the light. And it certainly has a classic escape the darkness into the light effect.
