interestingly enough not all the mavericks were evil by coice, a good lot of them were done by infection, others were by choice, and then others were just for the pure fact of revenge on the hunters

My only issue is his trident makes me think of fire because of the design of the 3 prongs, whereas from his name it's obvious he's cold related.

It being a trident fits great, yes. Cold energy isn't usually quite as jagged though I think. That's usually reserved for fire and lightning
