One third of the way up
The seven hundred plus steps
That lead to the top of the Ulmer Münster,
I had to stop, worn.
In a musty attic room full of sepia prints
I feigned a casual intellectual interest
While I slowed my pulse to catch my breath
And pondered going down again.
When I reached the ground again
And looked up and down again,
I captured an image that was locked in my eyes,
Then made it as old as the ones in the attic
As I staggered off gasping, back to the car,
And vowed never to climb up again.
Let the Münster stand for another aeon,
Let the clouds roll over its stone.
Let it rain and shine on what man gives to God,
You'll never, ever get me up there again.

Yup, if you can make it. We got to the top in 2005 and I had a sudden realisation that I do not like heights. Yet if you put me on the top of a television tower I have no such problem. Needless to say, 2008 was not a good year for me and climbing stairs ... fat wolves stay on the ground.
