Unfortunately they're not lol. Spiral stairs are also not friendly for those that exceed a certain weight and/or width.

Given they were originally designed to allow you to ascend while removing the minimum amount of material from the surrounding stone (and to deny an ascending soldier the ability to swing with his right hand) that shouldn't really surprise you.

I'm pretty small in both dimensions and I'm still not a huge fan. They always seem perilous if you have to walk anywhere but the widest part!

Did you ever realise car doors would have to have the hinge at the rear rather than the front end of the car to avoid slamming your tail in them? :P
