One of my final projects from art class last year. The prompt was pretty simple--draw something that has a message to it. No medium requirements, no size requirements, nothing. Obviously, then, this was supposed to be a social statement about society and conformity. In the wake of rising tensions over race, gender, and sexual preference, it often feels like those of us that are "different" are either rejected or erased. So many people are forced to hide who they are for their own safety, to conform just to get by. What's underneath that façade is anyone's guess, but it's far more of who you are than any label anyone else can put on you.
This was sketched up with pencil first, then shaded with charcoal and some chalk pastel for the eyes. I think the face(s) turned out well enough on this one, but the shirt is pretty boring, and I fucked up that arm beyond any hope of repair. (To quote one of my friends when I asked for a critique, "WELLLLL, you forgot the wrist...") Oh well. Live and learn. Haven't forgotten the wrist ever since.
