The Excelsior is definitely one of the sleeker looking of the Federation starships.

Shame the whole transwarp experiment was a major bust.

Oh man, YES! And with it's original Trans-Warp nacelles too, awesome! The story behind it's design was pretty neat too. They wanted to build something larger and much more beefier/modern looking that then refit Constitution class, but apparently when they were assembling it, the model folks put the saucer part on upside down, which is why the edge slants differently than all the other starships of the time. When Roddenberry and others saw it, they said "I like it!" So they just went with it, and the design forever influenced other starships. ^_^

On a lore-based note, the Excelsior-class starship had one of the longest service records EVER as well - still in use 100 years after the original vessel.

To be fair, the Excelsior class starship was one of the longest lived designs, used right up through the TNG era.

Even shows up in DS9 too, during the Dominion battles.

Holy shit. This is one of my top fave ships, and this piece is superb. I would buy this.

Redesign was meant to upgrade deficiencies in the original Excelsior Class. Mainly defense. Hence the look of the Enterprise B.

As much as I love the Enterprise (and Reliant) the Excelsior is a fucking awesome ship and it sucks it never got enough screen time. This art is amazing. I was glad Sulu ended up commanding it.

The Excelsior... man I haven't seen this snazzy ship in forever! The shape was considered ugly by a lot of people but I think it has a distinct personality! It SCREAMS "I am powerful!", even next to the obsolete Klingon D-Class Battleship, this is one of the few ships in the series I could've imagined taking on a Borg Cube and not suffer too much damage (seriously, Borg Cubes are made of squared evil <.<) so... dude this is some FANTASTIC work, I dig the warp-effects so much I cannot even state how much I dig them and the spectral coloring and the shimmer! You just made this science fiction geeks night! KUDOS! XD.

I wish there had been a series of the Excelsior and Captain Sulu.

No series unfortunately but aside from "The Undiscovered Country", the Excelsior was seen in Voyager for an episode,where Tuvok revealed that he served under Captain Sulu.

I too love the Excelsior more than any other ship. And the monster maroon movie era uniforms more than any other. It's just everything right for a while. The bridge design, the military/nautical feel, the music.. Everything fit just right. And the fact Sulu got the command of the Excelsior just makes it better even :3 Oh my!

It actually look me awhile to learn to like the Excelsior. But then the only ship class that I immediately feel in love with was the Sovereign class.

Sovereign is first for me as well, with Excelsior a very close second!

This is also one of my favorite ships, it has such an elegant, yet powerful design to it. It looks exceedingly different from most other Federation starships, with the exclusion of the Centaur and other variants.

Indeed the Design of the Excelsior is beautiful, but the Refit of the Constitution Class and the Intrepid are close behind it.

This is absolutely beautiful.

Every Trek fan has his/her/its own personal favorite class - mine tend to be the Constitution refit, Galaxy, and Prometheus - yet none may argue that the Excelsior had an impact on Starfleet, and this is a wonderful exhibition of the class.
