People hated it because it was so poorly explained in-game and even in the official game guide.
You had to look up like three different FAQs just to learn how the fuck to play the game.

I'll admit that it takes quite a bit of a learning curve to learn how to play the game but its not that bad all that hard.
Aside from that all you really need was a better team. Cause lets be honest here, the Aurochs suck...literally not figuratively.

thing was, it was a bit of a dick move making the first match you play so important. trying to win that was so difficult, having to reset it over and over -_-

The Aurochs definitely sucked major (blitz)balls.
Mother and I were playing it years back and we were so fucking confused about the whole thing, that even after their "explanation" and my mother digging around in our game guide, we just utterly bombed so hard in Blitzball.
So we just said "Fuck it" and never messed with it again.
