Dragon Cake - M'Kaelen Shadowdragon
"When you stare into the eyes of a dragon, what do you see? His soul? Or do you just see alkalised cocoa powder, maltodextrin, emulsifiers and high fructose corn syrup?"
Happy 30th to
! To celebrate the occasion and to delight a dear friend, I made this cake in the likeness of his dergsona.
The base was loosely based on the Fire Breathing Dragon Indestructibles cake pattern and then I abandoned the instructions and followed Shadow's reference to make sure the rest of him was accurate. He also got strategically positioned so he would fit on his cake board.
Cooking time: 45m per cake (x2)
Construction/Decoration time: About 4 hours
Eating Time: About 10 minutes. Sli got to eat the butt. :3
Worth it. Love you, Shadow. <3
Cake Details: Chocolate butter-cream frosting, Chocolate Devil's Food Cake inside. Everything is edible except for the eyes (which are laminated printer paper) and the structural toothpicks and bamboo skewers that held the horns up. The horns, claws, grey lower jaw and wings are marshmallow fondant.
To anyone who asks - "How do you make black icing?" Ignore all the advice you read on Yahoo Answers about blending the RBY food-dye primaries in even distribution. When you have chocolate, you'll just throw the colour out even more. Don't waste your time and ingredients - go to a proper cake store and buy actual black colouring gel (I used Wilton's Brand).
The gold coins are chocolate too. :)
