Schooners actually have a pretty long history in arctic waters. Reinforced beams and metal plating below the waterline are usually enough to make them quite survivable among the ice, even when completely frozen in during the winters - like so: http://cbbernard.com/wp-content/upl.....b-ice-tent.jpg
