Sorry this is a bit noisy and not that great a shot, but it was the best I got of her head and I had to do a lot of tweaking to make it look somewhat decent.
Ants are NOT easy to photograph. Not like spiders. Ants never sit still. :P

Typically it's caused by the ISO (sensitivity) setting. If you don't have enough light, you need to increase the ISO, typically, to allow for the exposure to come out properly.
Higher ISO values tend to generate more noise.
Brightening a dark image (such as in this case) can reveal noise that you may not have noticed before. In this photo I forgot that I had the camera set to JPEG instead of RAW format. Typically I can do better touching up a photo from RAW than JPEG and I would get less noise.
It also varies from sensor to sensor. My last camera was a Panasonic DMC-FZ7 and it typically was more noisy than my current camera.
