I'll be darned. We used to get a similar vine which would grow wild, all under the back deck of the house in Oakland. I found out the things were known as "Wild cucumbers" and the spikey green pods were poisonous. Too bad. I would have enjoyed something other to add to my "Wild Onion" diet.
