The Holstarr class armored cruisers were the beginning of the Waldian Navy's experimentation with long range cruisers. They were also the first Waldian cruisers to be equipped with torpedoes, though these torpedoes, specifically the Mark 3, were early compressed air designs that were prone to explosions or un-commanded activations. It was a group of these torpedoes that caused the severe damage and eventual sinking of the first cruiser of this class the WSS Holstarr (CR-18). The cruisers served well for nearly twenty years before being retired to make way for the more advanced designs.
