This came out better than I had anticipated. Heres Some backstory about DeVout. :)

He was working on this Crystal that would allow him to Create life, however in the middle stages of Creating such a heavily complex project, the crystal cracked and shattered into hundreds of pieces, releasing all the woven threads of energy into the air. The resulting explosion of energy punched a hole into space, creating a rift between worlds, between realities, and in a flash of light, Devout had disappeared.
