My mer OC, Nauta. Nauta is heavily inspired by a sailfish; the gouge in his tail is from a fishing line that dug deeply into his skin.
Nauta goes by masculine or gender-neutral pronouns, but Lorn mers all possess the same sexual organs.
Mer languages consist of a wide array of vocal sounds and physical gestures, making it difficult for land-dwelling species to speak even the simplest mer dialects. Many of the sounds needed for these languages also work well only underwater; in addition, a good portion of their physical language requires a tail and fins.
Due to these language barriers, many land-dwelling Elders mistakenly believe mers to be unintelligent, likening them to animals. Some human fisheries even specialize in catching mers for their tail meat. This practice is done largely in secrecy, with many fishermen selling mer tail meat under the name “longfish”.
"Guilt" and its characters belong to me.
