Well, it's also hard to carry the payload that chopper's packing when you have to flap to keep aloft. Not to mention for most birds, hovering in place isn't easy unless you're a hummingbird. Beside, who better to pilot any kind of aircraft than one who is quite literally born to fly?

In this universe, all the bird characters do not have wings! :D They have feathers and tails but lack the bone structure required for wings -- no accented keel/breastbone/sternum, etc. Just arms. XD

I literally had 
Kardi calculate current fuel prices (diesel, I believe) versus what fuel prices were back in 2011, since 2011 is when this story takes place. Based on the model of helicopter we chose (it's a Bell 429 Air with some modifications) and what the mileage is for that type of helo, we came up with a total price of a little over $800 USD to fuel it from empty.
Kardi has the actual numbers, I believe...! :D
