I have the same problem sometimes, even with my simple black and white sketches they'll still look more grey than black...
One thing that may help is running the scans through an image software and just increasing the "contrast" up and playing around with the shadow and highlight areas. A simple free program like Windows Image Gallery or iPhoto can easily do that :D

Yeah, I think the scanner light makes things too bright thus ruining dark lines sometimes. And thanks for the suggestions. I've had a couple computers die in the last few months and had never gotten around to finding free downloadable software that would do that. I think I'll try the Windows Image Gallery as it sounds like something I may have had in the past.
