TBH sidemouth is actually something I find to be ingenous when employed correctly, just because I think it looks cool. It might be nostalgia talking, but I always liked how it looked. For some reason, when it's done so that there's only a teensy tiny space between the mouth and the front of the face, I think it looks elegant.
I've seen way too many american cartoons where the side-profile talking mouth looks like "NYAGBH NUUAGH NYAGH MAGH," and the lip-syncing was always terrible. "Th" when saying "Vuh," "FFF" when saying "Mmm," etc.
The simplicity and language barrier-shattering "open-closed-open-closed" thing that anime did made me jump up and down for joy. It showed me that you can make a cartoon that is easy to watch and suspend your disbelief during, yet also allow it to cross ALL borders and be shown around the world.
I think these are a few reasons why I like side-mouth and I've never really been bothered by it. Some people may see it as laziness, but I see it as an elegant solution to a really big obstacle, which is "how to animate a mouth that looks believable no matter which character is speaking and who is voicing that character." Obviously not a perfect solution, but for what it is, I think it's pretty amazing.

Can't argue with that chap. :) Personally, I don't really care; every now and again when not watching I'll realise "oh wait.... they have a mouth on the side of their face that magically moves! :O" But for some people it destroys the animation for them. *shrug* Can't really see why; but y'know what people can be like.
