Is it upload hour again? OooooohoooooO (reversed audio)... Here we go again =P
As usual, let's get the clean stuff out of the way first =3
Another enemy concept... Or a boss, maybe.
One day, scrap metal from a dimension very far away was discovered.
Top engineers decided to reassemble it, in order to try to recreate the original contraption, to the best of their ability.
Unfortunately, the machine appeared to be sentient, and the project came to a halt when the machine went on a rampage, and escaped to who knows where.
Expert scientists concluded that it was some kind of huge toilet cleaner.
The name was derived from the machine's name plate, which was split in two, spelling "WEL" and "DAR", which, when reassembled, read "DARWEL"...
... Some say the whole machine was assembled incorrectly, but expert scientists refute such claims.
Spoilers: It's definitely a parody on Weldar, from the game Banjo Tooie.
Obviously, the scientists really screwed up on reassembling him, to the point of even getting the name plate wrong... No wonder it got pissed off =P
... Though it's still better than what happened to him in Nuts and Bolts, and this is honestly my attempt to "overwrite" that crappy canon >.>
Nevertheless, or alwaysthemore, as I always say, Weldar belongs to Rare... unfortunately >.>
(Go, Playtonic~ <3)

The Genre shift definitley threw a lot of fans off, but in its own right, it's a good game. Take the gummi ship building from Kingdom Hearts and inject it with shittons of steroids! It was more of an experiment, and if seeing how a game about building ships for different tasks was the plan, it was a success.
I don't know Kingdom Hearts, so I can't speak for that, but in Nuts and Bolts' case, it was pure trolling on Rare's part.
I point out to the very first trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLWLdO9GLWM
Another thing I like to complain about are the char designs, but that's not the important thing right now
That's not all, though. Later on after NaB was released, Rare announced another BK-related thing.
Then when the reveal was finally made public, it was just DLC for Nuts and Bolts, which came accompanied with a vid containing music that definitely implied they were trolling.
But that's not the main problem...
Tooie was released in November 2000. Nuts and Bolts in 2008, with only a minor GBA game, Grunty's Revenge, in 2003.
Fans have wanted a new BK game for a long time, and when that first trailer happened, massive hype ensued.
Then when the truth was revealed, all we got was bitter disappointment.
It's EXACTLY the same thing with the newly announced Metroid game. Spin-offs are fine, but after such a massive drought...?
But still, this is quite different. Most of the original crew of Rare that created the original BK has already left, including composer Grant Kirkhope.
We are left to wonder if we'll even ever get a proper BK game again, and if we do, will it even be on par with the 2 original games?
That's why my opinion is that selling Rare was an actual good thing on Nintendo's part.
And certainly, I jumped ship as soon as Playtonic showed up.
Donkey Kong is already in good hands at Retro Studios (Who even hired David Wise for Tropical Freeze!), so all in all, it seems like it's going to be okay with Yooka Laylee in development.
TL;DR: I respect your opinion of liking NaB, but in my eyes, it's not the genre shift that ruined it for me. It's the game itself that felt like such a massive troll to the previous installments (I.E. Weldar being a vehicle part, the new Stop 'n' Swop, L.O.G. taking Banjo's moves away, etc.), the long Banjo Kazooie drought that followed after Tooie, and Rare trolling the fans... THAT is what made Nuts and Bolts flop.
No hard feelings, okay? =3
