Totally Fool Proof
Yeah I actually did this today. I actually managed to get a 2TB external hard drive to save all my art and such on. I use it as a back-up station pretty much. All my finished art also ends up in my dropbox.
But some of you might remember last time I got an external HDD, when it broke within 4 weeks time - it actually crashed mechanically so it couldn't be fixed anymore, to my distraught because I had used it to transfer all my art from my old laptop to my PC and hadn't had a chance yet to actually save the files onto my PC. And yes, I dropped it, I'm an idiot, I know. But it's safe now! As you can see. It's actually on top of where my water cooler is connected to the fan so it's the coolest spot I could find for it.

But when it does degrade, you're left with a sticky mess that requires harsh chemicals to remove! I have a snow-mobile wiring loom coated in the stuff... Uck! Other than that, you're right.
But-
A belt or adjustable strap of some kind with non-slip rubber pads/blocks to keep things in place is both non-messy and reusable!

Yes straps would be the better option, I just haven't got any that would be long enough to fit all around my PC. I was kinda thinking about finding a way to creatively stuff that thing in the inside in a spot where it won't be in the way of my components.
But the marking tape is an okay short term solution plus it allows me to just take it off and bring it with me without having to go through some kinda trouble.

Well, it's usually pretty hard to drop them unless you have carpal tunnel like I do. :P Or have wabbly tables and other situations. I always keep it in a sturdy location and never move it because HDDs can't handle being moved a lot. Spinning disk with a small needle inside to read the disk, movement can cause it to touch and scratch the disk destroying entire sectors of the disk. So I don't move my HDD around ever. It's how all of my laptop HDDs have died too. :P
