^v^ Yes, they do tend to do that when you need them the most!
The haiku rules don't seem hard and fast. 5-7-5 syllables (like yours) is the most common I've seen in English (not that I read other languages. The only Japanese I know I learned in martial arts classes). However I think using language stress weights is more accurate.
Here's one where I tried to write a haiku by computing English syllable weights .... http://www.furaffinity.net/view/15139669/
That was a more challenging and spiritual exercise, but I think the 5-7-5 syllables flows better.
No raincoat for me
Much to bulky to carry
Barley-stuffed fox sprouts

Yeah, and this book I have of haikus by authors who are allegedly legendary haikuers, translated into English, of course (because learning a new language for me would be like learning to walk on six legs) -- these guys don't do those things in a majority of their poems. Granted, something might be lost in translation, but not THAT much!
So, I just tend to think a haiku should be fun and if I get something more in it, then I deserve a lollipop. Dipped in gin. ^v^

I got it right! partially (the 5-7-5 bit) but, stress weights? I will say i notice emphasis on certain words when i read what i write... but *tilts head* outside of that i don't think i understand *doom* ^^;
