Not in general -- just those amazing, glowing eyes! Wain wasn't really insane -- he just saw the world a little differently. Um, a lot differently. Okay, maybe he was insane...
We studied Louis Wain's work and his life story in an Abnormal Psychology class (back in 19-ought-77) and the class ended up of mixed opinion as to his sanity. Even today there is a lot of argument. Some claim he was psychotic, some say schizophrenic, yet another school of thought believes he had Asperger's Syndrome. I doubt the last for several reasons. Another theory is that he suffered an early-onset dementia -- he lived to be almost 79, so that's a possibility.
